The HODA-A™ Constitution
The foundational principles of Hands-On Data Acquisition & Analysis
Dr Jo Abbott, PhD — Founder, HODA-A™
Palpation has not failed because touch lacks value. It has too often been asked to produce reliable conclusions without adequate attention to validity, operator state, starting conditions, procedural consistency, interpretation and context. The HODA-A™ Constitution exists to hold hands-on assessment to a higher standard — and to hold HODA-A™ itself to it, permanently.
In twelve articles across four parts, it sets out what HODA-A™ stands for and what it must never become. Part I addresses the instrument: validity before reliability, the practitioner as part of the measurement system, and the establishment of the 0–0 datum. Part II governs the acquisition of data: observation before interpretation, standardisation before comparison, and the principle that touch is information, not authority. Part III places reasoning and the person at the centre: clinical reasoning before technique, the person before the finding, and adapting the method rather than forcing the person. Part IV binds the framework to evidence, education and stewardship — including the commitment that uncertainty should be taught as a professional discipline, not treated as weakness.
Each article carries an explicit constitutional requirement, and every future HODA-A™ programme, publication, assessment and authorised resource is measured against them. Published openly, because a framework built on scrutiny should welcome scrutiny of its own foundations.
