RESET Coach

Back Pain Systems RESET Coach™
Dr Jo Abbott, back pain systems reset coach
Back Pain Systems™ Professional Pathway

RESET Coach™

Trained to support the Back Pain Systems RESET™ journey — exactly as prescribed.

The RESET Coach™ pathway is designed for personal trainers, physical therapists, movement professionals and hands-on clinicians who want to support people completing the Back Pain Systems RESET™ programme with precision, confidence and integrity.

RESET™ is not a collection of random exercises.

It is a structured back pain recovery pathway inside the Back Pain Systems™ App, designed to help people move out of the vicious cycle of flare-ups, fear, guarding and relapse through the five RESET™ stages:

Release Evolve Stabilise Exhale Transition

A RESET Coach™ helps the person using the programme apply the work correctly, safely and consistently — without changing, modernising, diluting or reinterpreting the method.

Release. Evolve. Stabilise. Exhale. Transition.

RESET Coach™ Role

What is a RESET Coach™?

A RESET Coach™ is a trained support practitioner who helps people complete the Back Pain Systems RESET™ programme as prescribed by Dr Jo Abbott.

Their role is to support the participant’s set-up, positioning, exercise execution, sensory awareness and movement confidence as they progress through the RESET™ pathway.

RESET Coaches™ are not trained to create their own version of RESET™.

They are trained to protect the integrity of the method.

This means:

  • Following the RESET™ programme exactly as delivered in the app.
  • Supporting the participant through each phase in the correct sequence.
  • Checking set-up, alignment, execution and tolerance.
  • Applying hands-on support where appropriate.
  • Using calibrated perceptual assessment to observe how the person responds - Minimal requirment HODA-A Level 1 Certification.
  • Understanding when to refer back to Dr Jo Abbott, a physical therapist, or another suitable healthcare professional.
Why This Pathway Exists

Why RESET Coaches™ are needed

Many people with back pain do not fail because they lack motivation.

They struggle because they are frightened, guarded, unsure how to set themselves up, or unclear whether what they are feeling during movement is safe, useful or a warning signal.

Inside the RESET™ videos, participants are regularly advised to seek assistance from a personal trainer, physical therapist or suitably qualified professional to check their set-up and execution of the exercises.

The RESET Coach™ pathway exists to make that support more specific.

Rather than simply asking any movement professional to help, RESET Coaches™ are trained to understand the Back Pain Systems™ model, the RESET™ sequence, the hands-on perceptual assessment framework, and the standards required to support a participant without disrupting the method.

Hands-on support + perceptual assessment

The role of hands-on support

RESET Coaches™ are trained to use hands-on support and perceptual assessment in a disciplined, respectful and clinically reasoned way.

This is not about forcing movement, correcting people aggressively, or imposing a practitioner’s preferred technique over the RESET™ method.

It is about using skilled observation, calibrated touch and appropriate hands-on intervention to understand how the person is responding to the RESET™ pathway — and to help them move towards their goals with greater confidence, safety and precision.

Chronic back pain is rarely driven by one single factor. It often involves multiple maladaptive patterns across movement, guarding, breath, load tolerance, tissue sensitivity, fear, fatigue and nervous system protection.

These patterns can limit how well a participant can access or benefit from the RESET™ programme.

The role of the RESET Coach™ is to help identify and unfold these patterns, using hands-on assessment and support where appropriate, so the participant can engage with the prescribed RESET™ exercises more effectively.

Manual therapy may support the RESET™ participant

Where clinically appropriate, and within the practitioner’s professional scope, this may include hands-on techniques that help the participant access the RESET™ pathway more effectively.

Massage Soft tissue work Joint mobilisation Manipulation Dry needling Manual therapy Perceptual assessment Movement support

The goal is not to change RESET™.

The goal is to help the person experience RESET™ more accurately — and to use skilled hands-on support to help them reach their individual goals.
RESET Coach™ Standards

Required training pathway

To become a RESET Coach™, practitioners must meet the required training standards.

1

Professional background

RESET Coach™ applicants should already be working in a relevant professional field.

Personal training Strength and conditioning Physical therapy Physiotherapy Osteopathy Chiropractic Sports therapy Massage therapy Movement coaching Rehabilitation support

Each applicant is reviewed individually.

2

HODA-A Level 1: Perceptual Calibration Certification

RESET Coaches™ must be qualified to HODA-A Level 1.

HODA-A trains the clinician or practitioner as the measurement instrument. It teaches practitioners how to calibrate their hands, attention, perception and interpretation so that hands-on assessment becomes more disciplined, reflective and defensible.

Because RESET Coaches™ are supporting participants through hands-on observation and perceptual assessment, HODA-A Level 1 is a core requirement.

3

Familiarity with the Integrated Systems Model

RESET Coaches™ must also be familiar with the Integrated Systems Model , because RESET™ is not simply an exercise sequence.

It is a systems-based process that considers movement, behaviour, threat, load, breath, recovery and the person’s real-world context.

The Integrated Systems Model helps clinicians organise their knowledge and consider how multiple body systems may contribute to pain, disability and movement behaviour.

This supports the RESET Coach™ in understanding where a person may need to start, rather than simply following symptoms or applying a fixed protocol.

4

RESET Coach™ mentoring

Following the required foundation training, RESET Coaches™ receive personal mentoring from:

Dr Jo Abbott Founder of Back Pain Systems™, HODA-A and the RESET™ programme.
Teresa Dixon Global trainer supporting the application of RESET™ in practice.

This mentoring focuses on how to systematically apply assessment and support to the individual person completing RESET™.

Method integrity

What RESET Coaches™ are not allowed to do

To protect the integrity of the programme, RESET Coaches™ must not reinterpret, dilute or rebrand the RESET™ pathway.

  • Redesign the RESET™ exercises.
  • Modernise the exercises into another method.
  • Add unrelated exercise progressions.
  • Remove key elements from the RESET™ sequence.
  • Rebrand the work as their own system.
  • Treat RESET™ as a generic back pain class.
  • Override the instructions given inside the app.
  • Present themselves as diagnosing or treating conditions outside their professional scope.

RESET™ has been prescribed with clinical reasoning, sequencing and purpose.

The RESET Coach™ role is to support application — not reinterpretation.
