Written for massage therapists, sports and remedial massage therapists, soft tissue therapists and myotherapists, Before the First Touch examines the clinician as instrument — how attention, expectation, hand use and context shape what we feel; why experience alone is not calibration; and why the research debate around palpation asks the wrong question first. Its central argument reaches beyond any single profession: before we test reliability, we must stabilise the instrument.
It also looks at assessment as the quiet infrastructure of safe practice — recognising the presentation that has changed, the symptom that doesn’t fit, and the client who needs referral rather than another session. These capabilities earn massage therapy its place at the clinical table, and they can be trained.
