Description
Clinical, Occupational & Sports Science Biomechanics Appointment with Jo Abbott
This appointment is for those individuals who are keen to establish an understanding of causal mechanisms for selected movements such as: sitting (car/desk), walking, skiing, cycling, squatting, jumping etc. Biomechanics is an increasingly important area of scientific study for addressing problems related to human health and performance. Biomechanics is one of the disciplines in the field of Human Movement and Exercise Science and it can be divided into three broad categories from a research perspective: Clinical, Occupational, and Sports Science. Clinical, Occupational, & Sports Science Biomechanics incorporates a detailed analysis of sport movements in order to minimise the risk of non-contact injury and improve movement performance.
The Science bit
Sport and exercise biomechanics encompasses the area of science concerned with the analysis of the mechanics of human movement. It refers to the description, detailed analysis and assessment of human movement during sport activities. Mechanics is a branch of physics that is concerned with the description of motion/movement and how forces create motion/movement. Biomechanics is traditionally divided into the areas of kinematics which is a branch of mechanics that deals with the geometry of the motion of objects, including displacement, velocity, and acceleration, without taking into account the forces that produce the motion while kinetics is the study of the relationships between the force system acting on a body and the changes it produces in body motion. In terms of this, there are skeletal, muscular and neurological considerations we also need to consider when describing biomechanics.
Clinical biomechanics involves research in the areas of gait, neuromuscular control, tissue mechanics, and movement evaluation during rehabilitation from either injury or disease.
Sports Science biomechanics research is the ability to establish an understanding of causal mechanisms for selected movements
Occupational biomechanics typically involves research in the areas of ergonomics and human growth or morphology as they influence movement.
This appointment gives you the opportunity to tell your story, focus on your specific concerns, share your thoughts and feelings about your health and wellness: where you have come from, to where you desire to be. These three valuable hours are spent assessing, exploring and discussing each contributing factor of your current health condition allowing yourself and Jo to re-structure and re-build a programme of health that maximises your potential and is focused on your current needs and life time goals.
The importance of a Clinical, Occupational, and Sports Science appointment should not be underestimated. Scientifically, the evidence supports that time spent exploring the patient’s story, the evidence based practice, interpreting the findings, and driving home the clinical reasoning is the foundation to success.
This appointment may include any/all of the following:
- Quiet standing assessment
- Weight transfer assessment
- Squatting assessment
- Non-weight bearing assessment
- Posture Analysis
- Sit-to-stand assessments
- Gait (walking) assessment
- Force Platform Analysis (standing, squatting, jumping)
- Wattbike Cycling Analysis (bike set-up and cycling relative to the clinical biomechanics findings)
