The Menopause

My Story At 51 years old, I have a few rather annoying menopausal symptoms that I hear other women my age struggling with.  Having worked in clinical practice since 2016, I have heard many women’s personal experiences of the menopause.  Each story sharing both positive and negative outcomes to treatments, all with one thing in common – science has yet to grasp the mechanisms of menopause, and how best to treat each individual women.  As a researcher, this is not a new topic in human body sciences. What is Multiple Sclerosis?

What is Multiple Sclerosis (MS)? Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease where the automatic immune system attacks the central nervous system because it thinks it’s a foreign substance. The Central Nervous System (CNS), brain and spinal cord, is the system of nerve tissues.  Nerve tissue controls voluntary (walking) or involuntary (breathing) activities for vertebrates, like you and I. What happens in the body? When the immune system attacks the spinal cord it damages the outer layer (myelin sheath) of the nerves and causes inflammation in small patches (plaques or lesions).  These eventually become scar tissue (sclerosis).  All these changes in the CNS can be seen on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Breaking down The myelin sheath protects and insulates nerve axons so that nerve impulses do not ‘leak out’. So if this outer layer is damaged it can cause chaos with the messages that travel along the nerve.  The damage can; …

Going in to a supermarket these days to pick up a pint of milk can be more confusing than ever before.  Since 2012, non-dairy milk sales have risen by 61% in the US, and since 2015 by 30% in the UK.  These alternative milks pea, coconut, oat, cashew, almond, soya, potatoes, banana, macadamia, hemp, and flax seed are reportedly being bought by the ‘millennials’ or those under the age of 35 years under the belief that these milks are healthier for the body and planets.  But are they? In general plant-based milks are made by grinding up the plant, soaking it in water, then adding emulsifiers and stabilisers to thicken the liquid and stop it separating.  Is it not better for the environment to just each the plant??
