HELP FUND VITAL DEMENTIA SUPPORT AND RESEARCH

Dr Jo Abbott Memory Walk Fund Raising

What am I doing?

Sunday 15th September 2024 @ 11am I’ll be participating in the Memory Walk – one of many sponsored walks held in September and October across the UK.

Every year, thousands of incredible people come together to walk for a future where dementia no longer devastates lives.

Dementia is the UK’s biggest killer. Someone develops it every three minutes and currently there is no cure. We know it is scary but we must confront the biggest health & social care challenge of our time.

  • 1 in 3 people born in the UK today will be diagnosed with dementia in their lifetime.
  • 1.6 million people are expected to be living with dementia in 2040.

By taking part and raising money, or donating to someone who is, you are helping to do this. Once you donate, JustGiving sends your money directly to Alzheimer’s Society you don’t need to do anything and it’s the most efficient way to fundraise.

We owe it to the 900,000 people across the UK currently living with dementia to campaign for change, whilst providing vital day-to-day support.

Why am I doing the Memory Walk?

I do this for AV 💙.

A true gentleman who has given a lifetime of work to helping those in pain all around the world.  I had the pleasure to learn from him and remain constantly inspired by his work.

At work, he embodied the necessary skill of critical thinking when conducting scientific research, and consistently produced new and exciting ways to explore the human body.

My first introduction to clinical biomechanics was through AV’s work, and all it took was his spark for the topic that paved the way to my doctorate.  His influential work drives me to be the best clinical biomechanist and scientific researcher I can be.

Albeit he does not live in the UK, I do this for AV, for his family, and all the families around the world who face the challenges that Alzheimer’s brings.

Research funded by Alzheimer’s Society is going towards training healthcare practitioners to communicate with GPs to help create personalised dementia care plans.  Dr Sarah Griffiths, based at University London, is developing the training with the aim to help these practitioners in supporting GPs in the creation of meaningful and individualised care plans for people with dementia. The goal is to improve the quality of care for people living with dementia, enhancing their overall well-being and addressing their specific care requirements.

Research wouldn’t be able to take these strides to make the world more dementia friendly without your incredible fundraising efforts, thank you!

Can you support and help me reach my goal of raising £2024.00?

Beach Cleans (2019)

Some of our best-loved marine wildlife is under threat from the waste and litter in our seas, with hundreds of species accidentally eating or becoming entangled in litter.  In 2019 we supported Keep Britain Tidy helping to make a difference by getting together with a handful of friends, neighbours or colleagues taking action in our local Beach Clean.  We collected over 12 sacks of litter from Hamworthy Beach and safely disposed of single-use plastic from our beaches and waters.

Getting Matt Fit for Children in Need

The first One Show Rickshaw Challenge saw television presenter, Matt Baker, ride a Rickshaw 484 miles from the Edinburgh Castle Esplanade to the BBC’s Broadcasting House in London. Matt and the team raised £1.9million for BBC Children in Need!  In a secret and quiet location at the BBC Studio’s Matt Baker we were part of a team that ensured Matt was ‘Ride-Ready’ for the Children in Need’s Rickshaw Challenge.
